NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — A government spokesman says Kenya wants food aid to be dropped by planes into Somalia to slow the influx of refugees into Kenya.
Tens of thousands of hungry Somalis have walked for days or weeks to reach refugee camps in Kenya in hopes of finding food and other aid. The U.N. on Wednesday declared the hunger crisis in two areas of Somalia a famine.
Kenyan government spokesman Alfred Mutua said Thursday that Kenya wants feeding centers to be set up in Somalia to save the lives of women and children who are dying on the long trek to Kenya's Dadaab refugee camp. He says the flow of refugees is unmanageable.
The U.N. says tens of thousands of Somalis have already died from the world's worst drought in a generation.
